CHAPTER 25

BALTASAR

I’m totally awesome at this second daddy thing.

After Zion had randomly run off, the little queen finished her ice cream—and his—before asking me to take her somewhere I liked to go as a kid.

It took me a few minutes to come up with an idea. Fun had not existed in my parents’ vocabulary—unless you counted murder—but there was one sibling who’d always been ready to get into mischief with me.

Violentia.

Even though there was a distinct age divide between both sets of Suarez kids, the twins and I were occasionally included in our older siblings’ schemes. Wolfy loved to spoil Gabe and Dre—since they were all on the same creepy wavelength. But Vi knew I was the guy to corral when she had a bad, possibly illegal, definitely ill-advised idea.

And that’s how little Balty learned about gambling!

“RUN YOU FREAKIN’ HORSE, RUUUUN!!!” Daisy stomped her little feet on the rickety bleachers—waving the race program over her head like she was a charioteer cracking a whip. “C’mon, Buttercup! Go, girl, GOOOOO!”

A smile stretched across my face as Buttercup—who was picked on the name alone—took the lead in the homestretch, leaving her competitors in the dust. Daisy whooped as the horse crossed the finish line because, of course, the little queen had shown no interest in place or show bets.

My girl came here to win.

It already blew my mind that Zion trusted me enough to be around his kid at all. But to leave her completely in my care—and then call her ours—made me warm and fuzzy.

I’ve got it bad.

I was so proud of Daisy’s victory that I took about eight million photos of her cheesing it up while collecting her winnings at the window. I couldn’t wait to tell Zion how much fun we were having with the money he’d left us, but before I could send him a text, the Queen of the Track took charge.

“Now I get to take you shopping, Blunty!”

What?

“Uhh… like for clothes?” I mumbled, blindsided that she’d want to spend her hard-earned dollars on me.

“No. Nothing boring like that.” She laughed and carefully slid her money into her shiny Chococat purse. “I want to get you something special. Something that will make being with us feel more like home.”

Arghh, my heart!

I dropped my gaze to the dusty floor, not wanting Daisy to see me tearing up right in front of her. That was when I spotted a discarded brochure for a local farmer’s market and I had another—extremely risky—idea.

Violentia would be so proud.

And that was how I found myself sneaking through the service hallways of the Salah haunted mansion, carrying a dozen hippie hemp bags full of exotic fruits, vegetables, and spices that Daisy had insisted on buying me. My girl was resting in her room before dinner, and Zion hadn’t returned from his top secret mission yet, so I was left to my own devices. And right now, I was determined to get in the good graces of the formidable lesser supe who cooked for this family.
